History of the Charity

The Mary Slater Charity is a Lichfield based charity that was founded in 1898 through a legacy from Mary Slater who lived at 17 Bore Street Lichfield.  Mary Slater 1827 to 1898 – is buried in St Chad’s churchyard together with her parents,  Thomas and Mary Haywood.  Mary also gave money for two windows in the South Side of the Church and provision of the oak ceiling in the adjacent aisle in memory of her parents

Mary Slater left a Will making provision for the Lichfield Nursing Institution and Invalids Kitchen, which had been established some years before for the relief of the sick and poor of the city and neighbourhood and was funded solely by voluntary contributions.

Over the years and still today The Mary Slater Charity’s purposes have remained the same – to help the people of Lichfield if they need assistance because they are poor and sick.
